Citizens Review

What is the Citizens Review Committee?

The Citizens Review Committee is a group of volunteers from the community that serve as stewards for funds contributed by United Way donors. The United Way Board charges this committee with the responsibility of reviewing and evaluating the funding requests made by agencies and programs in the community. These agencies and programs serve the needs of the most vulnerable persons in the community: the elderly, children and youth, the economically disadvantaged, persons with disabilities, children and adults who are abused, and persons in crisis.

The Citizens Review Committee, in partnership with the agencies, seeks creative strategies that :

  • Strengthen service delivery

  • Respect the independence of member agencies

  • Maximize the impact of charitable dollars

  • Meet the human service needs of vulnerable people in our community

The Citizens Review Committee makes recommendations to the Board of Directors concerning the funding of programs which truly reflect the United Way of Bartholomew County's core values. These would be programs that :

  • Promote opportunities for helping vulnerable individuals discover, develop, and express their human potential to the fullest extent possible, treating all of them with dignity and respect regardless of their current position on the dependence/independence continuum.

  • Enhance the quality of life of the community's most vulnerable residents by fostering a healthy interdependence of neighbor helping neighbor, and enabling those receiving services to become more effective and contributing citizens.

  • Work together with other agencies and services to maximize resources and outcomes by cooperating, coordinating, and collaborating service delivery in a continuum of collegial relationships across systems, among organizations, and on behalf of individual clients.

  • Demonstrate stewardship of donated funds and accountability to the community by supporting programs that address significant local human service needs, while ensuring that the community resources of time, talent, and money are transformed into effective and efficient services.
