United Way Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and AARP Tax Aide Programs:

United way is currently seeking volunteers to serve as tax preparers and intake specialists for the 2018 VITA/AARP Tax Assistance programs. Training begins in December.

Time commitment:  5 to 30 hours of training during December and January and 4 hours per week on site during the tax season from February through mid-April.

United Way 2-1-1-Holiday Helpline Registration 2017

Answer phones and enter information into the database to register local children and families for gift/food assistance. New volunteers to Holiday Assistance will need to arrive half hour early for training on the programs we register and on the holiday database.

Girls Scouts

Troop Leader

1-2 volunteers willing to make a difference in the lives of girls at Clifty Creek Elementary.  .  Meet 1-2 times /month using provided curriculum..   You provide the nurturing structure and we provide the support and training.

Hours and time commitment: Flexible – approximately 2-4 hours a month with girls; 2-4 hours preparation

Volunteer Recruiter

2-5 Volunteers needed to host recruitment booths at back to school nights promoting the values and benefits of Girl Scouting encouraging both girls and adults to become active in the Nation’s largest girl leadership program.  Bilingual skills an additional plus!

Hours and time commitment: depends upon the school’s calendar – arrive 20 minutes before event. Training provided.

2-6 episodic volunteers sought to lead or serve on a team that organizes year-long events for local Girl Scouts.  Help with one or multiple events that are fun and enriching for girls.  Training provided

The Columbus Salvation Army

We are looking for volunteers who are interested in working with youth.  We have youth programs on Wednesday evenings from 5pm-7pm.  We are looking for volunteers who can teach musical instruments or singing.  Also for volunteers who would like to work with the youth on earning badges.  Volunteers will need to go through a Safe from Harm training before working with the youth.

Time Commitment: 30 minutes to an hour a week.

Family Services

The Caring Parents Program provides the Period of Purple Crying education to family members of infants born at Columbus Regional Hospital which is a prevention program for Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma.  Along with this education we would like to provide purple hats for each family to take home with them.  If anyone is interested in assisting us with making these purple knitted or crochet hats, please contact Lisa Teague at lteague@familyservicebc.org or call 812-372-3745. 

The Columbus Bike Co-Op

12 volunteers of all skill-levels including bike mechanics needed to help Earn-a-Bike participants build bikes, help people who come in to do repairs, fix shop bikes, scrap old bikes, be a greeter or a monitor during shop hours, and help with local events such as valet bike parking at the farmers market

Hours: Sun 2-5pm and Mon 4-7pm

Time commitment: 3 hours every month

6-7 volunteers needed of all levels to help with the Trunk or Treat

One volunteer needed to prepare mailing lists.  Knowledge of mailing list databases required.   Volunteer needs to be able to work independently with little supervision.

Unlimited volunteers needed to supervise residents staying at the facility.  Staff will be accompanying volunteers as well.

2-3 Volunteers needed to assist clients in the Food Pantry, stock shelves and perform basic housekeeping duties.

Your Local American Red Cross

Short term - Event Based

Pillowcase project- American Red Cross is in need of volunteers to present Emergency preparedness training to a targeted 3rd   to 5th graders. This can be done in class or in an afterschool program. Included in this is emergency preparedness for tornado/floods as well as home fire safety.

Home Fire Campaign-Volunteers for HFC meet with a Red Cross Volunteer and canvas a town checking smoke alarms, replacing batteries and doing free installs at home that have no alarms or need replacement. A few minutes of onsite training is provided before the canvas. It would be great to have some on call volunteers to also do appointment installs.

Long Term

Canteen - Providing water, Gatorade and snack to fire fighters during active fires for hydration.

Disaster Action Team members-Volunteer are needed to do client casework in the aftermath of fires or natural disasters, caseworkers offer assistance to help establish a recovery plan and connect them with other community resources.

Volunteers 18 years and older are needed to help and will need to pass a background check.

Bartholomew County Triad

Bartholomew County Triad is a partnership between local law enforcement, older adults, and community groups. Currently, the Triad is working to identify needs of older adults in the community through a community needs assessment.  We are in need of 2-3 volunteers to help distribute the assessment throughout the community.

Three volunteers to come and deep clean our kitchen that is used for cooking classes for clients.

IGrad*

Volunteers needed to mentor and/or tutor students in grades 8th through 12th. Mentors help to ensure students make positive life choices, stay in school, and graduate with a life-plan or pursuing post-secondary education. Tutors help students in a specific academic area most often during the school day. Complete an application, pass a criminal background check, complete an interview with iGrad and complete a basic orientation/training with iGrad.

Utopia

Utopia Wildlife Rehabilitators is a non-profit wildlife conservation and education organization in existence for 15 years focused on native Indiana wildlife.

1-2 volunteers needed for feeding and treating native species and the cleaning of animal enclosures each Wed, 10:30am to 2:00pm (possibly other days). Assist with preparation of educational programs as necessary. Light grounds and facilities maintenance. Some moderate lifting, bending and stooping. Must be willing to work in "barnlike conditions".
