United Way offers free income tax filings for qualified Bartholomew County residents each year through the VITA/AARP Volunteer Tax Assistance programs.
The programs offer free tax filings to Bartholomew County residents who make $59,000 or less, persons with disabilities, elderly and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide confidential and secure basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. Volunteer tax preparers also help to ensure that families and individuals receive qualified tax credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
Over the past three years, the VITA/AARP Volunteer Tax Assistance programs have served thousands of people in Bartholomew County and saved taxpayers over $200,000 in fees.
Free Income Tax Assistance appointments will be conducted from February through April. Tax appointments will be held at the Doug Otto United Way Center and Mill Race Center in Bartholomew County. Starting in January, United Way will accept reservations for Free Income Tax Assistance appointments. Reservations will be taken on a first-come first-serve basis.
