Caye's Stairs

Even the single step leading to Caye’s ground-level apartment was uneven and crumbling. Something so small had become a daily barrier, making it nearly impossible for her to get outside safely. Her walker and cane caught on the broken edge of the stair, and she often stayed inside because navigating it alone felt too risky. Her patio, where she loved to sit in the sunshine, felt completely out of reach.

Caye, a Columbus resident, has had two strokes. Her mobility can be limited, and since moving into her apartment in June 2025, that uneven walkway had cut her off from the outside world. The fear of falling kept her indoors.

“I wouldn’t go out by myself,” Caye said.

Until now.

Through United Way of Bartholomew County’s Ramp It Up program, volunteers stepped in to help. They built solid, safe steps from her failing porch down to her patio. Their time and care helped give Caye access, independence, and a sense of ease she had been missing.

“I feel safe to walk out and sit by the patio when it’s warm,” Caye said.

The sleek tan wood is now a bright spot in her day. Neighbors and caregivers admire it, and Caye feels proud every time she opens her door. Most importantly, she has the freedom to enjoy the world outside again.

“It has taken a lot of stress off of me. I can go outside and not have to worry about falling.”
